Scripture: He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
Devotion: Mountain moving faith can be produced by faith the size of a mustard seed. The two are hardly in the same class. A mustard seed can be easily stepped on and crushed while stepping on a mountain will hardly destroy it. This scripture is the perfect demonstration of the power of faith.
It almost seems unfair. You would clearly think a mountain is much larger than a seed of any kind and could demolish smaller entities easily, but this passage of scripture tells otherwise. The Kingdom of God works backward. You can see this through scriptures: The last shall be first, turn the other check, the foolish things confound the wise, and more. (Matthew 20:16, Matthew 5:39, 1 Corinthians 1:27) Jesus didn’t leave us an impossible task, but at times can seem to be an intimidating one.
This scenario makes me think of David and Goliath. David was a teenager when he faced Goliath. David, not the average youth, had been in the fields tending to sheep while developing an intimate relationship with God. David knew God and his faith was demonstrated during these years.
David looked fear and death in the eyes before. He killed a lion and a bear with his bare hands. I’m sure David was afraid but he did it anyway. In the fields David learned to press past fear and he saw the hand of the Lord give him strength and power to overtake that which would otherwise have destroyed him. David knew the power of his God and took that faith into battle against Goliath.
We all know David went into battle his way with just a rock and a slingshot, his faith. Everyone shouted and gave praise to David for ridding them of this terror and he found great favor with the king. David did not go into battle looking for a reward. No, he went into battle in the name of the Lord focused only on moving the mountain named Goliath out of the way. David, used his faith to unset an intimidating enemy. Order was restored and God’s people were freed.
When facing a super sized battle we must first review our faith journey with God. Reflect on the hills and mountains we have already conquered. Read scripture that speaks of the power of God and share faith stories with friends. We must do things to increase our faith until our mustard seed is primed and ready for mountain removal.
Reflection: Is there a Goliath sized mountain you are facing? Is your faith arising or is intimidation and defeat looming? Know that God guarantees us victory. Stay steadfast and ask the Father to strengthen areas of your faith that are weak.
Prayer: Lord, we pray for mustard seed size faith. We petition you for a strategy to increase our faith and annihilate every mountain that stands before us! May our faith ever increase and May our shouts always be songs of victory!
